What Does Micronized Mean?

Micronization is a process that reduces a material into much finer particles.

Smaller particles provide greater total surface area. Within a formulation, this can help diosmin disperse more evenly and dissolve more readily than larger particles. It can also contribute to a smoother, more consistent application.

Human research comparing micronized and nonmicronized diosmin has shown that particle size can meaningfully influence absorption when diosmin is taken orally. (1) While the study examined oral diosmin, it illustrates an important formulation principle: changing particle size changes how an ingredient behaves.

For a topical leg care product, finer dispersion is part of creating a cream that feels refined from the moment it touches the skin.

What Other Flavonoids Can Teach Us

Diosmin is not the only flavonoid influenced by particle size and formulation design.

In laboratory research on topical quercetin, a related plant flavonoid, smaller solid lipid particles produced greater skin permeation than larger particle systems and a conventional quercetin solution. (2) Other quercetin nanoparticle research has also reported greater accumulation within the skin than a conventional solution. (3)

These studies reinforce a broader formulation principle. When working with poorly soluble flavonoids, their physical form can matter as much as their name on the ingredient label.

Diosmin and hesperidin are related citrus bioflavonoids that have frequently been studied together in circulation research.

Nurturelief uses glucosyl hesperidin, a water soluble form of hesperidin created by attaching a glucose unit to the original molecule. This modification gives it distinctly different formulation properties from conventional hesperidin. (6)
